Fresh Thursday // Kerrin Tatman + John Garner & John Pope Duo

  • Cobalt Studios 10 Boyd Street Newcastle upon Tyne, England, NE2 1AP United Kingdom (map)

FRESH THURSDAY is a regular event showcasing exciting new music alongside lots of candles, board games and a home-cooked slap up dinner.

Kerrin Tatman is an award-winning Newcastle-based composer and musician who writes a mixture of contemporary classical, neo-folk and art-song. They have been writing a modern reimagining of a Requiem as one of SageGateshead’s Artists in Residence 2022-2023, and will be sharing excerpts from the work-in-progress on piano at Cobalt Studios. The Requiem is set in a post-apocalyptic, semi-fantastical world and features a mixture of the traditional Latin text with original English lyrics by Rosie Bristow of Holy Moly & the Crackers. Rosie will also be joining Kerrin on the night to play some of her new songs. Come down and hear a taster preview of the Requiem in this intimate paired down version on piano and vocals.

John Garner & John Pope’s highly interactive and spontaneously explored music celebrates composers less frequently foregrounded in the contemporary jazz canon like Ornette Coleman and Carla Bley. The unusual lineup of violin and double bass gives a unique sound and demonstrates the adaptability of these compositions and this music in general. This will be a captivating, intimate and immersive performance.

"...not a note is wasted in these highly satisfying encounters between these two talented musicians...punctilious precision in the execution of formidably tricky charts..." - Dan Spicer, Jazzwise
